PlayStation (PS1)
Released in 1995, the PlayStation is actually the result of a failed venture with Nintendo to create a CD-ROM peripheral for the SNES in the early 90’s. Nintendo cancelled the contract out of fear of losing licensing control and money to Sony in the deal, but unknowingly prompted the technologically superior Sony to recommit to their creation and turn it into the PlayStation. The home of Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot, the PlayStation library of games totalled 7,918 worldwide, which helped it become the first home console to ship over 100 million units. The first console in a line of very successful successors, this is a veritable nostalgia machine.
